On 10 October, a Speaking Club session was held in Ankara to explore the effects of video games on children. The session brought participants together to exchange ideas, share experiences, and discuss different perspectives on the role of gaming in children’s lives.
The discussion covered both the potential benefits and challenges associated with video games. Participants explored how certain games can encourage problem-solving, visual attention, creativity, teamwork, and communication, while also considering concerns related to excessive gaming, violent content, sleep routines, academic responsibilities, and social interactions.
A key focus of the session was understanding that video games are not simply good or bad. Their effects can vary depending on the type of game, the time spent playing, the child’s individual circumstances, and their social and family environment.
Participants also discussed the importance of maintaining a healthy balance between gaming and other daily activities, including sleep, physical exercise, education, and face-to-face social interaction. The conversation highlighted the role of parental guidance and open communication in helping children develop healthier gaming habits.
Through an open exchange of ideas and experiences, the session encouraged critical thinking, respectful dialogue, and a more balanced understanding of the relationship between video games and child development. It provided an opportunity to reflect on how digital entertainment can be approached thoughtfully while supporting children’s well-being and development.
