Every day between 5-20 people come to the center, but during events more people participate. They have different workshops to involve the people into society. They also have volunteers at DIYED, so called Voluntary Mothers who are responsible for the activities at the center, they are helping the people with their physical needs and they also try to accommodate their needs. They also get help from the municipality, financially and practical help when they need a location to hold an activity. DIYED also help people with disabilities to get the healthcare they need, since many of them cannot drive a car and public transport can be a struggle, DIYED drives their van to the cities around Didim two days a week to make healthcare more available.
DIYED also offers their support and services to the families of people with disabilities, for example they can get education for better understanding what obstacles they can expect
to face and how to overcome them. They can also offer money for medicine or for food for the families with economic troubles. When the organization started, there were about 500 people with disabilities in Didim, so the need for these kinds of instances was big. There are similar organization in many places in Turkey, but they all work independently. They exchange ideas and suggestions with each other.
The NGO was born thanks to Bedri AltIntaş personal experiences, he knew that something had to be done. And even today, DIYED does not stop at just being an available and adjusted center for all, they want to make whole Didim a better and more accessible town for people with disabilities, something that hopefully will also make tourists come here, and people from all over Turkey. They have also a goal to make Didim a good city for rehabilitation – both for Turks and foreigners.
"DIYED was founded in 2006 in Didim. The organization works for and with disabled people here in Didim. Their center was built by 1001 volunteers, the volunteers also help the center with their garden as well as a van that they use in their work."
