Hello I’m Anastasija Gjorgjioska and I’m 22. I live in Skopje which is capital of North Macedonia. Im studying to become speech language therapist, because i love helping people, especially kids. I applied to this project so i can go out of my comfort zone, gain some knowledge for my future life, improve myself as a volunteer and most important be a better person.
Some people consider volunteering as charity work. They are doing that so they feel good about themselves. But its different for me. I want to help people for them, not for me, and sometimes i am the one who needs help. The point in life is helping each other. I want to change people perspective about certain things. For example, people need to learn a thing or two about disabilities. I dont consider people with disabilities odd, I see them as normal people, as any other human being. And i think the problem is that the most population is giving them a special treatment, which they dont need. They need the normal look from people, making them feel they are apart of their everyday life. They don’t need you to feel sorry for them, and u don’t need to. Because they are brave, they are smart and funny, and always amazing. They care ... there is no need for special treatment or different attention, they are not any different from us, and there is no us and them, its just we.
I have the chance to learn a lot from this project and from all the people around me, not just about discrimination and disability, but to know more about other cultures and gain some new life lasting friends.
Im in Ankara for almost two weeks and i can say I’m positively surprised. Maybe we don’t have the chance to see everything due COVID, but we’ve met a lot of amazing, kind Turkish people. Even that we don’t speak their language, that wasn’t a boundary so we cant be kind to each other. After this experience its hard not to come in Ankara again.
For everyone who is thinking is volunteering for Erasmus a good idea, remember that this is a lifetime opportunity that will help you to find yourself and become the better version of yourself. Its a experience that i’ll always talk about.
Good time, travel, new friends, knowledge.... you will always remember that. And you’ll learn that maybe u cant change the world around you, but you can be the change this world needs.
Every change starts with you, but everything great starts with Erasmus.
