Foreign Students Cleaned Up Şövalye Island in Fethiye
Students from around 8 countries came to Fethiye district of Muğla through the Erasmus Program and carried out a cleanup activity on Şövalye Island.
Last week, System and Generation co-facilitated a clean-up event, organized to promote the natural and historical beauty of Fethiye, in collaboration with the Mut Creek, Bird Paradise, Duck Island Protection and Promotion Association, who led the event. The students were picked up by boats from Şat Cape and brought to Şövalye Island, where they were informed about the history of the area and took part in an environmental cleanup.
During the event, the local news media, "Gerçek Fethiye", was present and did interviews with the president and a member of the leading association.
In a statement, Psychologist Abdullah Yılmaz, the President of the the Mut Creek, Bird Paradise, Duck Island Protection and Promotion Association said:
“Today, we came here with Erasmus students from around 8 different countries. Our goal is both to promote Fethiye and to carry out cleanup activities in its paradise-like spots. Alongside our founding friends from MUTDER, we picked up the students by boat from Şat (coast) and brought them to Şövalye Island to both introduce them to the island and contribute to environmental cleaning. Last month, we carried out a similar activity in Karagözler , with the same aim of raising environmental awareness. These young people are all very conscious about such matters. Our aim as MUTDER is not only to conduct cleaning activities. Our association includes areas like Kuş Cenneti ve Örnek Adası Mut Deresi (Bird Paradise and Duck Island within Mut Stream) . As you can imagine, we are sensitive both to the habitat and to the bird species and vegetation in the area. For example, with the support of our district governorate, we are planning an amateur canoeing competition in Mut Stream next month. We will continue similar sports and environmental activities in collaboration with the Provincial Youth Directorate. Fethiye belongs to us. Fethiye is a piece of heaven, and we must take care of it. While living here, we may not realize it, but we need to protect this paradise-like place. I believe we can do great things — for its plants, its animals, and its environment".
"We Carried Out a Cleanup with Students Who Came through Erasmus”
Fevzi Karcı, a member of the Mut Creek, Bird Paradise, Duck Island Protection and Promotion Association, said:
“The reason I became a member of this association is this: When the weekend comes in Fethiye, the question always arises — ‘What should I do? Where should I go?’ There are so many beautiful places...” One week I think, ‘Should I go here?’ the next week, ‘Should I go there?’ — it's hard to decide. The beauty here is overwhelming. But our only real problem is cleanliness. People throwing trash around, leaving cigarette butts, environmental pollution... It saddens both the public and me deeply. Personally, I asked myself, ‘What can I do?’ Then I learned that we had this association, and I immediately became a member. We joined an activity together with our friends. We came to Şövalye Island along with our foreign guests, friends who came through the Erasmus program. This week, cleanup work is being carried out here. The environment is being cared for, and the island's history is being shared. It's truly a wonderful activity — I highly recommend it to
everyone,” he said.
